01 / Website audit

A small business website audit you can use

For every audit finding, ask for three things: the page address, the obstacle and the check that proves it is fixed. If a report cannot tell you where to start or how to finish, ask for a clearer finding.

Begin with the customer’s question

Choose a service and read its page without filling in what you already know. Can someone tell whether the business handles their need? Can they find where it operates and how to take the next step?

Write down the missing answer at the point where you need it. On a pet care site, that might be an intake requirement beside the first-visit inquiry. Look for real photographs or reviews that help with that decision. Record a specific gap rather than describing the whole site as unclear.

Use the phone layout to complete a task

Open the menu, follow a service link and try the form on a phone. Look for cramped controls, text that runs off the screen and maps that cover other content. Notice whether an image delays the information you came for.

Record the page and the action that failed. A screenshot can show a clipped field, but also write what you tried to do. After the repair, repeat those same steps. Seeing the field again is not enough if you still cannot use it.

Give each search page a job

Read the browser title and description for each important page. They should describe what a visitor will find there. Check that the page heading keeps that promise and that the page links to a useful next step.

Include service-area details where they help someone decide whether to call. Check image descriptions for information a reader needs. Flag pages that repeat the same material with a different place name. Ask what unique customer question each page answers before keeping it.

Turn the technical report into repairs

Use performance and accessibility checks to locate problems. Ask for the affected image, control or page, rather than a score alone. Test important links and confirm that a form submission actually arrives.

Separate a blocked inquiry from a visual improvement. Give the person doing the work a way to repeat each failure. Before launch, check the old page addresses as well as the new navigation. Keep the completed checks with the fix list so you know what was proved.
