Website refresh, redesign or rebuild?

Before you list what needs replacing, list what deserves to stay. Useful pages, working links and a clear inquiry path are part of the brief. They give you a way to judge whether a larger project is necessary.

Refresh the parts around a working path

A refresh suits a site where people can already find the right service and contact you. The work might be a clearer introduction, new photographs or more comfortable spacing on a phone.

Try the current navigation and form first. If those work, list the exact edits and the pages they affect. For a plumber, correcting the service area beside the phone link may solve the immediate problem without replacing the site.

Redesign how the pages guide a visitor

A redesign changes the way information is presented. It can move the useful details earlier, reorganize a page or make the phone layout easier to use. It also gives you room to bring the site’s appearance into line with the business.

Sketch the path from the first screen to the inquiry. Mark where a visitor needs an explanation or a photograph before continuing. Ask to see that path in the proposed design, including its phone version. New colours alone will not answer a missing service question.

Rebuild when the setup gets in the way

A rebuild changes how the site is put together. Consider it when ordinary edits are difficult, important journeys are broken or the business no longer fits the old page structure.

Before work starts, save a list of existing page addresses. Decide which will remain and where replaced pages should redirect. Include checks for loading speed and accessibility in the launch work. Test the inquiry route on the new site before sending customers to it.

Choose the scope you can explain

Describe the problem as something a customer cannot do. Then ask which part of the proposed work removes that obstacle. If the answer is a wording change, start there. If the obstacle sits in the underlying setup, ask what a rebuild will make possible.

Keep the useful pages and links on the brief alongside the fixes. Compare proposals by what they preserve and what they repair. The words refresh, redesign and rebuild matter less than that agreement.
